Cultural Highlights at Potsdamer Platz
Some of Berlin’s most culturally and academically significant institutions are located near Potsdamer Platz, such as the New National Gallery, the Gemaeldegalerie (Art Museum), the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Applied Art), the Philharmonie, and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library) around Matthäikirchplatz. Established in the 1960s, the Kulturforum Berlin was created to symbolise a culturally dynamic West Berlin as a counterpart to the Museum Island in the East of the city. The architectural ensemble houses not only one of the capital’s most important collections, it also includes the Philharmonie and Chamber Music Hall, home to the world famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to outstanding exhibitions and concerts, the architectural legacy of Mies van der Rohe, Hans Scharoun, Heinz Hilmer and Christoph Sattler attracts visitors. Architecture, music and the fine arts form a cultural centre in Berlin at Potsdamer Platz.
