Good Morning Berlin! – Breakfast on Potsdamer Platz

Coffee to go or an extended gourmet buffet? Anyone looking to have breakfast on Potsdamer Platz is faced with a hard choice. A quick guide.

The Coffee Shop

Room with a view
Artikel FrühstückThe décor – dark wooden tables, cream-white upholstery, grape-shaped chandeliers – matches the grandeur of Haus Huth, the oldest house on the square and home to the small coffee shop. The offers range from the usual café snacks such as ciabattas, brownies, scones and cakes, to coffee from an espresso machine fed with a bean mixture specially roasted for the chain. It is a pleasant place to sit with large windows, especially in the early morning with its view of Potsdamer Platz slowly coming to life. Business people with Smartphones pressed to their ears hurry past street cleaners, while next door the shop windows are being brightly polished. And for refreshment a latte macchiato with perfect foam – fine pored but not too firm –and a chocolate croissant with creamy hazelnut nougat filling. Now the day can begin!

Breakfast: Monday to Sunday 8 am to 8 pm
The Coffee Shop, Alte Potsdamer Straße 7, 10785 Berlin

Artikel FrühstückNot just burgers
Anyone taking breakfast in the world famous fast-food restaurant has a surprisingly wide choice. In McCafé you can enjoy a cappuccino or caramel macchiato, croissants with butter and jam or muffins. However, one shouldn’t expect anything as exotic as Soya milk, although the coffee is strong and aromatic. Of course you can get cheeseburgers and hamburgers too – and not just early in the morning. The McDonald’s on Potsdamer Platz is open around the clock.

Breakfast: Monday to Saturday 7 am to 10:30 am, Sundays and bank holidays 7 am to 11:30 am

Salomon Bagels

Classic selection
Artikel FrühstückHere you will find something for every taste, and anyone who wants to read their newspaper in peace – the latest copies are laid out on the bar – will also find their place, alongside small groups looking to enjoy an extended breakfast. The offers range from sweet to savory, from “Petite Française” with honey, fruit and freshly squeezed juice to the salmon breakfast and hearty country omelet with mushrooms, potatoes, tomatoes, onions and olives for those with a large appetite. Coffee is not included in the price. At Salomon Bagels everything is freshly prepared, there is nothing out of the can. Of course the bagels play a major role and accompany all the breakfast menus. The dough rings are cooked in water and at Salomon are available in 17 varieties – for example with pumpkin seeds, thyme or cinnamon and raisins. However, they also taste fantastic plain.

Breakfast: Monday to Saturday 8.45 am to 9 pm, Sunday 10 am to 8 pm

For brain-workers
Artikel FrühstückAt eight thirty in the morning the queue is full of N24 employees. Which is not surprising as this coffee shop has virtually everything stressed editors need for a good start to the day: coffee specialties from classic cappuccino to deluxe varieties with syrup, cream and chocolate or caramel sauce. There are vegan brownies, savory sandwiches, donuts, muffins and yogurt with fruit. In addition to the popular chai latte, the coffee shop chain also offers the new urban cult drink, matcha tea. The finely ground green tea powder, beaten to a foam in hot water, originates from Japan and is known to be detoxifying and good for one’s health. In Meyerbeer the tea is served with milk as “matcha latte”. The color is reminiscent of pistachio ice cream, while the taste is very fresh and pleasantly mild – and with three percent caffeine a great pick-me-up.

Breakfast: Monday to Friday 7.30 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm

Fruitstars Berlin

Vitamin-packed mixtures
Artikel FrühstückAnyone who likes to eat something light for breakfast should check out Fruitstars in the basement of the Potsdamer Platz Shopping Arkaden. Here you can find invigorating fruit salads, yogurts and curd cheese dishes, but also drinks and freshly pureed fruit. The liquid fruit for people in a hurry is available in a variety of mixtures, one of which is called “Antistress”, consisting of grapefruit, orange, beetroot, honey, pineapple and lemon. The pot of yogurt with crunchy muesli and fruit is also highly recommended: the muesli flakes are packed separately so one can add them fresh, just as you like it. The yogurt is low fat, but creamy, topped with finely chopped pieces of peach, strawberry and pineapple. For even more vitamin intake there is the freshly squeezed orange, apple or carrot Juice.

Fazit in The Mandala Hotel

The big selection
Artikel FrühstückEvery morning a gourmet buffet is served to hotel guests, which can also be enjoyed by non-residents – provided you have made a reservation. Even the atmosphere is relaxing: a glass cube high up on the fifth floor where one sits down to eat surrounded by a bamboos forest and a gently burbling amphora fountain. The service is unobtrusive but attentive, bringing an extra chair for the handbag, or – on request – eggs in every imaginable variety, poached, scrambled, with bacon, with salmon. The buffet consists of small bowls and plates with goat’s cheese, ham and salami, grilled tomatoes, warm lentil salad, marinated artichokes, pancakes, waffles, handmade jams and much more. There are Artic Sea prawns with different dips, rolls and juices, including exotic varieties such as kiwi, wild berries or mango, naturally all freshly squeezed.
